Helping Others Brings Great Satisfaction

What do you desire? Is it on a shelf in the local department store? Modern life is filled with materialistic desires, yet when the desire is examined; it is often an unfulfilled need that drives the purchase. Looking deeply into one’s life and its meaning can be a cost saving measure in addition to bringing great pleasure and satisfaction into a life that is missing the perception of well being and happiness.

Satisfaction in life is different for every person. Perhaps personal circumstances have forced a change in life or the current economic times have resulted in a need to cut back on unnecessary expenditures. Regardless of the circumstances, looking at the basic needs that bring happiness into one’s life can bring a calmer more meaningful existence amid the materialistic desires.

Building community with friends or neighbors can bring a network of support when extended family is spread across the country. Reaching out to a neighbor in need can cost nothing but can fill a lonely void in both lives; providing support and networking opportunities. Potluck dinners and a DVD movie are simple pleasures without the expense of a night on the town.

Reaching out to others in greater need than oneself can bring perspective to an otherwise isolated life. No matter how unfulfilled or unsatisfied one is with life, there is someone out there who is struggling more. Volunteering in the community to work with fellow residents in need can be fulfilling and can make a difference in both lives and ultimately in society. Providing companionship for someone alone without family or living in a nursing home can bring a ray of sunshine. Working an occasional shift in a homeless shelter or a shelter for victims of domestic violence not only supports the community but provides a perspective that the people who benefit from these services are just like you and me, we are all human and we all have a need to find meaning in life.

Perspective is reality and taking the time to examine our own thoughts, desires, and needs allows us to focus on the most important aspects that bring satisfaction to life. The designer handbag or the latest model of golf clubs will not add meaning to life. Sharing ourselves with others, building a strong community, offering support to others in need and being a good neighbor will enhance our wellbeing and our level of happiness.

Reach out, lend a hand, hold a hand, contribute to the community with your time and presence. Helping one person may change a family and society at large. The financial cost is minimal, the rewards can be fulfilling and life changing. Do you really desire the latest gadget on your shopping list, or are you seeking a deeper unfulfilled desire? Examine your own life, spend time with others in need, the material desires will not be as important.
